Therapy For Dementia
There are a number of different methods which are effective as therapy for dementia in some people, and they do not all involve the taking of drugs. We will explore them one at a time.
Massage is a great way to help the dementia sufferer to relax and if combined with aromatherapy oils it can be very effective to relieve some of the anxiety or depression linked to dementia.
Music Therapy For Dementia
Music therapy is a great therapy for dementia, but it is most effective if the music can be linked to happy memories from the past, so that the patient can be helped to recall them verbally. Choice of music is important to jog the persons memory and they will then be able to sing some of their favourite songs from the past. Not everyone responds well to this therapy, but for most it is a good natural therapy for dementia.
Reminiscence therapy is also a very useful method of therapy for dementia because it stimulates the mind into remembering experinces from the past. Any objects from around the house can be used for this such as photographs, which are particularly good for jogging the memory.
Another method to try is referred to as reality therapy, which simply involves talking to the dementia suffere about current events from the news, discussing things that will happen on which day of the week or the month. Looking at the calendar or newspaper to clarlify the day and date is useful. It is common for dementia patients to lose track of what day, month or even year it is, so this is a useful therapy for dementia.
Snoezelen Therapy For Dementia
There is another therapy for dementia called Snoezelen therapy, and this simply involves using multi-sensory stimulation in a quiet and soothing environment. This method was first used in The Netherlands in the 1970′s and spread throughout the countries of the world. The Snoezelen room was formed to provide stimuli for soothing sounds, lighting, atmosphere and textures which is set to suit the requirements of the dementia sufferer. This method of therapy for dementia has been found to lessen aggression in many sufferers.
