Treatment For Alzheimers

Although there is not a known cure as a treatment for alzheimers at the moment, there are a number of medicinal and herbal remedies that will help to slow down the progress of this disease or improve the symptoms.

The first type of medicine that is used as a treatment for alzheimers is called a cholinesterase inhibitor and there are three available medicines in this category, Exelon, Reminyl and Aricept.

It is known that people who suffer with alzheimers have a depleted number of nerve cells which use a chemical messenger by the name of acetylcholine, and the more nerve cells that are lost will relate to how severe the alzheimers symptoms become in the sufferer.

These three medications work in the same way as a treatment for alzheimers by helping to protect the level of acetylcholine by stopping it from breaking down, and this prevents the alzheimers from worsening by helping to maintain the communication by the chemical messenger in the brain. The main side effects reported from taking these medications are, diarrhoea, nausea and sickness, or decreased appetite. But always report the side effects of any treatment for alzheimers to your doctor or specialist.

 Treatment For Alzheimers

The other main type of medicinal treatment for alzheimers is a new receptor antagonist called Exiba. This drug works in a very different way by blocking the messenger chemical called glutamate. It works because the glutamate is released in greater quantities when the brain cells suffer damage from alzheimers, and the glutamate has a tendency to cause even more damage to the brain cells. So by blocking the excess glutamate it is possible to save the brain cells from more damage, and this is how this treatment for alzheimers works.

Exiba has been found to help calm the aggressive symptoms of alzheimers in many patients, although there are some mild side effects from taking it such as, constipation, tiredness, an increased blood pressure, headaches and dizziness. Although none of the prescription drugs for the treatment of alzheimers have been found to be addictive.

Natural Treatment For Alzheimers

There are some more natural treatment for alzheimers, and Ginkgo Biloba and Vitamin E are thought to be helpful to some sufferers. The substance  extracted from the Ginkgo Biloba tree has been considered helpful at improving the memory for some alzheimers patients. Although it is less effective for those with dementia who also suffer with heart defects, as it seemed to worsen the dementia for this group of people who participated in a recent study.

It has been reported that a healthy diet including plenty of foods containing vitamin E could lessen the chances of developing alzheimers disease for those who have a family history of alzheimers. Although supplements should be taken with caution if used as a treatment for alzheimers, since vitamin E is considered to be harmful to those patients who take prescription medicines for blood clotting, such as warfarin.

Vitamin E can be found naturally in sunflower seeds, nuts, fish liver oil and soya beans, so it is probably advisable to include these foods in your diet though, rather than to risk taking too large a dose as a supplement to your diet. But as with all medications, always seek the advice from your doctor about which treatment for alzheimers is the most appropriate one to use.
